WESTMANLAND – Alton W. Simmons, 97, died Jan. 2, 2009, at his residence. He was born May 4, 1911, in Waldoboro, the son of Harvey and Leola (Elwell) Simmons. He married Evelyn Groves, Aug. 24, 1945. Mr. Simmons was a true jack-of-all-trades. He was a lobster fisherman, clam digger, a general contractor and much more. Surviving are four sons and two daughters-in-law, Alton and Linda Simmons Jr. of Bremen, Ken Simmons of Coventry, Conn., Robert Simmons of Holden and Richard and Betty Simmons of Westmanland; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Simmons was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn, Nov. 10, 2008. Private family services and interment will take place at a later date in Tenants Harbor.
