SHERMAN and BANGOR Burton R. Mitchell, 91, died Jan. 2, 2009, at a Bangor nursing home. He was born March 31, 1917, in Sherman Mills, the son of Fred C. and Lucy (Osgood) Mitchell. Burt and his brothers were co-owners of Mitchell Brothers, Sherman, for more than 30 years. The business, originally known as F.C. Mitchell and Sons, was carried on by the boys after their father’s death. He was well known for his mechanical skills and was never happier than to be under a bailer or truck in a field making repairs to farm machinery. He graduated from Sherman High School, was a member of Sherman Fire Department for many years and treasurer for Molunkus Stream Snowmobile Club. He loved to snowmobile and enjoyed it until he turned 80, then decided to quit. He was also instrumental in establishing Sherman Transfer Station in ’94 and ’95, and was a member of Washburn Memorial Church, Sherman. He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Anderson and her husband, Robert, of Bangor; grandsons, Jason Robert of Bangor and Geoffrey Burton of Greenville; a special niece, Linda Carson and her husband, John, of Chelmsford, Mass., and their daughter, Laurie Ann Shufrin and her husband, Dan and their children, Madison, Benjamin and Michael; as well as many other special nieces and nephews; and a brother, Dean and his wife, Elaine, of Veazie. He was predeceased by his wife, Erlene (Patterson) Mitchell; his brothers, Robert, Thurlow, Myron, Clement and Raymond; and one sister, Carlene Bernier. A special note of thanks is extended to all the staff at Sylvia Ross Home, where he spent the last few years of his life. They are a very special group of caring, loving and supportive people who made his life more comfortable in every way during his stay. They are truly a wonderful group of people. The family also expresses its appreciation to St. Joseph Hospital Hospice organization for their wonderful support during his last few months and also to a Hospice volunteer named Jim, who spent many hours visiting Dad. Visiting hours were held 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, at Washburn Memorial Church, Sherman, where funeral services were held 2 p.m. with the Rev. Leon Robinson officiating.
