BAR HARBOR – Carroll Blanning Schmelzer, 94, died Jan. 5, 2009, in Bar Harbor. She was born April 10, 1914, in Kalispell, Mont., the daughter of the Rev. Ralph and Laura (Stayner) Blanning. Carroll graduated from Bangor High School in 1932. She worked as an executive secretary for Sylvania Electric for more than 20 years. Carroll had a longtime interest in Native America and especially loved Mount Desert Island. She had a great passion for nature and enjoyed her gardens and flowers. Carroll loved reading classics and she was a great knitter and seamstress. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and belonged to several community groups in Stow, Mass., and was a former member of the Unitarian Church, Stow, Mass. Carroll is survived by her beloved and loving husband of 72 years, Frank E. Schmelzer of Bar Harbor; two sons, John Schmelzer and his significant other, Jane Fogg, of Franklin and Henry Schmelzer and wife, Cynthia Livingston, of Mount Desert; three daughters, Jane S. Reynolds and her husband, James, of Mount Desert, Margaret Durgin and her husband, Roger, of Napa, Calif., and Dorothy King of Ashland; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
