BANGOR – Joyce W. “Sally” Myers died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009. She was the wife of the late Dr. Basil R. Myers and the daughter of Alice Isabella and Frank Flaxmer. Sally was born in England, where many of her family still live. Her husband, her parents, four sisters and two brothers predeceased her. She is survived by three sisters and one brother, Nesta Pipe, Patsy Keeling and Michael Flaxmer, all of England, and Phyllis Keller, who resides in California. All of her siblings had children, so she had many nieces and nephews. Also surviving Sally are her two adoptive families, Dr. and Mrs. Daniel McCarthy, who had always been there for her and whose lives she had shared since 1982 when their children adopted her as their grandmother. She danced at all of their weddings and had seven great-grandchildren. Kelley married Sean Kane and they have two children, Aidan and Mairead; Joseph married Wendy Woodbury and they have three children, Erin, Daniel and Katie; and Lindley married Ignacio Chirosa Rios and they have two children, Samuel and Gabriela. They have given Sally great joy throughout the years. Her other adoptive family is the Clevens from Chelmsford, Mass. Carol and Wally have been friends since Sally and her husband arrived in this country and lived in Champaign, Ill. They and their family, Kern who lives in Seattle; Jeffrey and his wife, Mary and their son, Stone; and Mary’s sister, Sarah, spent many holidays together and shared many memories for years of loving and caring friendship. Both families enriched her life so much. She also thanks her good friends from her old neighborhood and her other friends who gave so much of themselves for her, especially Jan Skaggs and Steve Doughty; and her good friends, Tricia Dixon, and Dr. and Mrs. Toby Atkins. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating. Those wishing to remember Sally in a special way may contribute to the Children’s Museum, 74 Main St., Bangor, ME 04401 or to a charity of their choice.
