PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police say they have charged a 34-year-old man with arson for allegedly setting a fire at a convenience store after a clerk refused to sell him beer.
Clinton French of Portland was arrested Thursday for the fire at a Big Apple store near downtown.
Police say French became angry when he couldn’t buy alcohol last Sunday night and returned to the store a half-hour later with a gas can.
Officials say he poured fluid outside the building and in the entryway inside the store before setting it on fire, but only minimal damage occurred.
