EPHYRHILLS, Fla. – LeRoy Hugh Carey, 70, passed away Jan. 15, 2009, at his home, after a long illness. He was born June 3, 1938, in Winn, son of Henry and Mildred (Hurlbert) Carey. LeRoy was a carpenter for most of his life until illness forced him to retire. He enjoyed warm weather, fishing, visiting his family and friends during the summer months, and sitting around a campfire at his daughter’s camp in Maine talking politics with his son. LeRoy grew up in Howland and worked many years at Howland Tannery. He settled in Edinburgh and became a self-employed carpenter, eventually moving to Zephyrhills, Fla., to continue his business and to escape the cold weather of Maine. Along with his carpentry business, he also worked as a maintenance man at several Zephyrhills, Fla., businesses. In addition to his wife, Sharon, he is survived by two sons, Henry Carey and wife, Diana, of West Enfield, and Jon Carey and wife, Rhonda, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; two daughters, Jeannie Averill and husband, Brent, of Prentiss, and Kelly Phinney and husband, Peter, of Lincoln; three stepsons, Travis, Jesse and Ty; 10 grandchildren, two great- grandchildren; brothers, Delmont and wife, Inez, Norman, and Theodore and wife, Eileen; sisters, Rebecca Martin, Eldora Merrill and husband, Robert, and Ruth Afolderbach; and sister-in-law, Charlene Carey. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his second wife, Thelma; brothers, Carl and James; and nephew, Michael. A graveside memorial service will be held in the spring.
