CHESTER and TUCSON, Ariz. – Alfreda Leavitt, 89, passed away Jan. 20, 2009, in Tucson, Ariz. She was born April 4, 1919, in Woodard Siding, the first child of George and Cora (Curtis) Brown. She was a hard working woman with a love for travel that took her to many places throughout North America and Europe. She enjoyed reading and music, and was always ready to dance a jig. Her knack for gardening ensured that she always had an abundance of beautiful flowers. She was very proud of her family and loved them all dearly; many still warm themselves with the afghans that Gram crocheted for them. She was a member of the Grange, Ladies Auxiliary and Eastern Star. She is survived by four children, Vernon and Debi Ireland of Tucson, Ariz., Hermon and Carol Ireland of West Enfield, Beulah Gooch of Veazie and Russel and Patty Ireland of Chester; 20 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Hugh and Joe Brown; three sisters, Leah Ireland, Georgia Smart and Alma Fleming; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by the father of her children, Obediah Ireland; her second husband, Waldo Leavitt; a son, Victor Ireland; two brothers, Warren and Kenny Brown; three sisters, Donna Brown, Leona Chubbuck and Alice Dolley; two grandsons and three great-granddaughters. Graveside services will be held in the spring at South Chester Cemetery.
