Serena Dubois of Bangor is having an outstanding season at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts.
The 5-foot-9 junior forward is coming off her second straight basketball player of the week award in the Division III New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference.
Dubois, a former Bangor High School standout, poured in a career-best 29 points in Saturday’s overtime victory over Springfield College. She averaged 23.5 points and 9.5 rebounds last week while shooting 64 percent (21-for-33) from the field to pace the Engineers.
Dubois has been a key performer for WPI, which boasted a 14-4 record (6-0 NEWMAC) and an eight-game winning streak going into Wednesday night’s league game at Babson.
Dubois leads the Engineers in scoring (14.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg), ranking seventh and 10th, respectively, in the league statistics in those categories. She also leads the NEWMAC with a .581 field-goal percentage and is averaging a team-best 2.1 steals per game.
Dubois is averaging 27.7 minutes per contest for coach Cherise Galasso’s squad.
At Bangor, Dubois was a Big East Conference Class A All-Star playing for coach Tom Tennett and helped the Rams reach the Eastern Maine Class A semifinals in 2006.
UMPI’s Davis tops MWBCA stats
Erica Davis of the University of Maine-Presque Isle is the top scorer and rebounder among the state’s small-college women’s basketball programs.
The 5-11 forward from Cumberland is scoring at a 19.2 points-per-game clip and is averaging 11.4 rebounds per outing. Davis has helped propel coach Tracy Guerrette’s Owls to a 6-5 record, including a 4-0 mark in the Sunrise Conference, and four straight wins.
Davis also leads all MWBCA players with 4.1 steals per contest and is shooting 53 percent from the floor to rank fourth in that category. She also has averaged 1.3 assists.
Davis has done much of her damage while coming off the bench as she has started only four of UMPI’s 11 games.
Colby’s Garrec shines at meet
Lucy Garrec of Freeport, a freshman at Colby College in Waterville, had two strong finishes during the Bates College Winter Carnival held last weekend at Black Mountain in Rumford.
Garrec became the program’s first-ever winner of a Nordic ski carnival race Saturday when she claimed victory in the 15-kilometer mass start skate race. Garrec was timed in 45 minutes, 44 seconds, earning a seven-second victory over Caitlin Patterson of the University of Vermont.
Garrec opened the event Friday with a third-place finish in the 5K classic race.
The Colby women took third in the team competition and the men were fourth, while the Mules wound up fifth overall.
UNE men on 13-game win streak
The University of New England men’s basketball program continues on a tremendous roll, having won 13 straight games.
Coach Jason Mulligan’s Nor’easters boast a 14-3 overall record and sit atop the Commonwealth Coast Conference standings with a 5-0 league mark. UNE hasn’t lost since dropping a 63-49 decision to Bowdoin College back on Nov. 25.
The Nor’easters have excelled with a potent offensive attack. They are averaging a league-best 82.1 points per game, shooting 45 percent from the field and 36 percent from the 3-point arc.
Spearheading the UNE attack are Johnnie Jefferson, who is averaging 16.5 points per game on 39 percent 3-point accuracy, Jaykyri Simpson (12.5 ppg) and Quentin Thompson (11.5 ppg), who is connecting on 40 percent of his 3-pointers.
The squad has a distinctive Texas feel, as eight team members hail from the Lone Star State, including six from the city of Austin. The only Mainers are seldom-used Travis Guerrette of Raymond and Jordan Stinglen of South Berwick.
