WEIRS BEACH, N.H. – Sidney E. Ames, 92, died Jan. 29, 2009. He was born June 2, 1916, in Bangor, the son of Samuel Ames and Frances “Fannie” (Raichlen) Ames. From 1930 to 1950, Mr. Ames had resided in Orono, where his family operated a bowling alley on Mill Street. Mr. Ames graduated high school in Orono and attended the University of Maine, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in 1938. Mr. Ames’s family operated a summer arcade business in Old Orchard Beach from 1936 to 1950. Since 1950 Mr. Ames had owned the Half Moon, a summer business located opposite the boardwalk in the center of Weirs Beach, N.H., and had played a key role in the development of this summer resort community. He is survived by his sons, S. Jeffrey Ames and H. Michael Ames, both of Weirs Beach, N.H., and Robert Ames and daughter-in-law, Gail Ames, of Newton, Mass.; his daughter, Victoria Witt of New York City; three grandchildren, Sheryl Ames, Lydia Ames and Winter Ames; nieces, nephews and many friends in Florida. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at Temple B’nai Israel, 210 Court St., Laconia, N.H. Shiva will be held 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the family home, 15 Hamilton Ave., Weirs Beach, N.H.
