MADAWASKA, Maine — Organizers are hoping that up to 500 snowmobilers will turn out for the 13th International Snowmobile Festival in northern Maine’s St. John Valley.

The festival, which got under way Friday, offers more than 600 miles of trails to ride in northern Maine and New Brunswick.

Part of the event’s popularity stems from an agreement between Maine and New Brunswick that allows participants to buy a special three-day pass allowing them access to trails on both sides of the border.

Besides trail riding, there will be a moonlight drag race, fireworks, a dinner, a breakfast and a dance.

Organizers say snowmobilers from as far as Pennsylvania and South Carolina have registered for the festival, which runs through Sunday.
