LIMESTONE – Eva M. Leighton, RN, 90, wife of the late George “Bud” Leighton, passed away Sunday afternoon, Feb. 8, 2009, at a Van Buren nursing facility, after a brief illness. She was born May 5, 1918, in Limestone, daughter of Robert and Edna (Griffeth) Leavitt. Eva was a graduate of Limestone High School, Class of 1936 and went on to attend the nursing program at Mercy Hospital, Portland, graduating in 1940, where she attained her registered nursing degree. She was married to George “Bud” Leighton, in 1939 and had been employed by Cary Medical Center, Caribou, as a registered nurse in the emergency department for many years, until her retirement in 1980. Eva enjoyed ceramics, needlepoint, knitting and crossword puzzles. She was a lifelong member of Limestone United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Leighton was predeceased by her husband, George “Bud” Leighton, April 23, 1985; three brothers, Linwood, Harry and George Leavitt; and four sisters, Doris Leavitt, June Noyes, Gladys Hanscomb and Rena Webster. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Rena Leighton of Limestone, Donald and Gail Leighton of Sandwich, Mass., and Richard and Julie Leighton of Van Meter, Iowa; one brother, Samuel Leavitt of Caswell; one sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Norman Beaupre of Caribou; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Foster of Presque Isle; seven grandchildren, Russell Leighton of Limestone, Peggy Merchant of Jacksonville, Fla., Brian Leighton of Middleburg, Fla., Lori Parker of Columbia, S.C., Wendy Schachtner of Albuquerque, N.M., Keith and Kenny Leighton, both of Phoenix; 10 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted at a later date. Spring interment will take place at Advent Cemetery, Limestone. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Leighton to the Jefferson Cary Foundation, 163 Van Buren Road, Caribou, ME 04736. Arrangements are in the care of Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield.
