MERCER, Maine — State Police say the death of the driver of a Jeep which swerved into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer truck early this morning was a suicide.
Investigators say it was an intentional act that killed 46 year old David Leavitt of Belgrade. The crash closed down busy Route 2 in Mercer for ten hours until the wreckage could be removed.
The driver of the loaded pulp truck – Randy Wentworth, 50, of Abbot – escaped injury, but damage to his big rig will exceed $50,000.
Troopers learned that Leavitt had been despondent over the breakup of his marriage and had been talking about suicide in recent days.
