STETSON – Herman Richard-son Wakem, 96, passed away Feb. 10, 2009, at a health care facility in Bangor. He was born Oct. 16, 1915, in Greenfield, New Brunswick, the son of Robert R. and Lillian (Cox) Wakem. He was naturalized a U.S. Citizen, Presque Isle in 1924. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in World War II with the Sea Bees. He married Muriel P. Worth in 1936. Herman worked for Maine Potato Growers, Presque Isle, from 1949 to 1957. He took a job with the Panama Canal Government, Panama, and worked there until he retired at age 62. He left Panama and made his home in Milton, Fla., where he lived for 30 years. He was a member of Fairis Hill Baptist Church, Milton, Fla., where he taught Sunday school for many years. For the past several years Herman and Muriel made their home with their daughters in Stetson. Herman is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Muriel P. Wakem of Stetson; his two daughters and their husbands, Connie and Charles Merrill of Stetson and Sherry and James Petty of Lakeland, Fla.; five grandchildren, Mark Merrill, Kelly Merrill, Jody Lyford, Jeffrey Petty and Timothy Petty; six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at Clarks Hill Cemetery, Stetson, in the spring. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, Newport.
