OLD TOWN – Leo Raymond, 79, passed away Feb. 11, 2009, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Sept. 9, 1929, at Eagle Lake, the son of Marcel and Flavie (Gauvin) Raymond. He was one out of 10 children. Leo attended Eagle Lake schools and entered the U.S. Army in 1948. He was a sergeant and served for four years in the 24th Infantry Division and fought in Korea, where he was wounded. Leo was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Leo married Shirley (King) Raymond, June 1, 1953, and they had four children together. Leo took pride in his family and his work. He was a master craftsman, who, by himself, built a summer camp on the shores of Schoodic Lake, Brownville. He enjoyed spending many happy hours there with this wife, family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, reading and wintering in Florida. Leo was a lifetime member of Resurrection Parish at Holy Family Church, Old Town. As a young boy, Leo was a church altar server, and he had always been devoted to the Lord and his Catholic church. Leo lived his Cursillo at St. Paul’s Center, Augusta, in January 1981, and is now living his fifth day! Leo leaves behind his little dog Princess, who was always by his side. Leo is survived by his wife, Shirley; his four children, Mark Raymond and his wife, Glenda, of New Sharon, Karen Paradis and her husband, Thomas, of Lincoln, Lisa Raymond of Old Town, and Paula “P.J.” Hill and husband, Charles, of Apollo Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Shawn and Shane Graham, Lindsay Jones, Sarah, Joseph and Isaac Raymond, and Chaz Hill; and his seven great-grandchildren, Hannah, Jacqlyn, Ryan, Cameron and Dillon Graham, and Gage and Kalib Jones. He is also survived by his three siblings, Jeanette McPherson of Connecticut, Norman Raymond of Louisiana and Thelma Alkas of Connecticut; many nieces and nephews. Leo was predeceased by his parents; and six siblings, David Raymond, Ernest “Don” Raymond, Eva Marie Kehoe, Emelda “Millie” Perry, Annette Waye and Gilman Raymond. The family thanks the staff at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor, for the kind and compassionate care they gave to Leo. Family and friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at Resurrection Parish, 429 Main St., Old Town, with the Rev. Bill Labbe officiating.
