BROOKSVILLE – Wayne Junius Dillon passed away Feb. 11, 2009, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. Born April 4, 1916, in Windsor, Ohio, the youngest son of Maude and Walter Dillon, he moved with his family to Leipsic, Ohio, when he was seven. Wayne graduated from Leipsic High School in 1933 and in 1937 went to Alaska, where he worked on the Alaska North Slope at Barter Island and Point Barrow. From December 1941 to September 1945, he was in the Army Air Corps in Panama as a radar/radio operator with the 6th Air Force, 74th Bomb Squadron. Discharged as a tech sergeant, he returned to Alaska. In the early ’50s, he attended four years of college, earning a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology at Mexico City College, Mexico. On vacation in Washington, D.C., in 1961, he met and married Grace Ladd, and they lived in Alaska until retiring to her hometown of South Brooksville in 1978. Wayne was a member of International Operating Engineers, Local 302, joining in 1950; Pioneers of Alaska and Brooksville Historical Society. Wayne was predeceased by his parents, one sister and nine brothers. Wayne will be greatly missed by his wife, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; two of his former Spanish students, Maria Rave and Ligia Vega; friends, neighbors; and one special friend, Sara Stallman.
