HOULTON, Maine — A local man remained in critical but stable condition Wednesday at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after a stabbing incident just before 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Phillip Kay, 27, has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident at 3 Maliseet Drive that sent Joshua Foster, 22, to the hospital.

According to Houlton police Detective Carolyn Crandall, the two men had attended a gathering Monday evening along with Foster’s live-in girlfriend Amber Tompkins, 22, and their friend Jerry Hayes, 30, who resides on Cary Street.

“Everyone had been getting along fine and nothing seemed wrong,” Crandall said.

Kay, Hayes and Tompkins all returned to the residence on Maliseet Drive and apparently went to bed, Crandall said.

Sometime later Foster returned home and a scuffle broke out between him and Kay which, in turn, woke Tompkins up.

Crandall said that Tompkins witnessed Kay stabbing Foster and immediately woke up Hayes who pulled Kay away from Foster.

Tompkins called 911 while Foster ran from the house, got into his vehicle, attempted to back out of the driveway but hit a snowbank, Crandall said.

Kay followed Foster on foot but members of the Houlton Police Department arrived before Kay could get to Foster again.

Crandall said Foster suffered multiple stab wounds that were considered life-threatening. He was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital and subsequently taken by LifeFlight helicopter to EMMC.

Due to the seriousness of the attack, members of the Washington County Evidence Recovery Team and the Maine State Police Criminal Investigation Division went to the scene.

Crandall also said that two children who belong to Tompkins and Foster were not at home at the time of the incident as baby-sitting arrangements had been made for their planned evening out.

Kay is being held in the Aroostook County Jail with cash bail set at $2,500. A court date of April 16 has been set.
