DEER ISLE, Maine — Two men were hospitalized, one with serious injuries, after an early morning stabbing incident Sunday in Deer Isle.
Maine State Police detectives were still investigating the details late Sunday afternoon, but it appears as though Jeffrey Jones, 42, and Carlos Garcia, 21, got into a fight and ended up stabbing each other.
“Initial information indicates Jones and Garcia became involved in an argument outside an apartment building located just off Route 15A,” a statement from Detective Sgt. John Cote read. “The argument escalated to a physical confrontation with both eventually each receiving multiple stab injuries.”
Jones, of Florida, and Garcia, of Stonington, were taken by ambulance to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital shortly after 2 a.m.
Jones’ injuries were more severe, according to Cote’s statement, and he was flown by helicopter from Blue Hill to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was listed in stable condition late Sunday.
Garcia, meanwhile, was treated at BHMH and released.
Police are not sure of the nature of the relationship between the two men or why they got into a fight. Cote’s statement said several witnesses are being contacted and interviewed.
So far, no charges have been filed, but Cote indicated that detectives will continue their investigation today and will consult with the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office.
