BREWER – Virgil H. Bisset of Blue Hill, died Feb. 22, 2009, in Bangor. He was the son of Harold and Alice Bisset, both of Blue Hill. Mr. Bisset received his education at George Stevens Academy, Blue Hill and Leland Powers School of Radio, Television and Theatre, Boston. His career was largely in radio in Shuri, Okinawa; Massena, N.Y.; Ellsworth and Maine Public Broadcasting. He also worked in journalism with the Christian Science Monitor, Boston, and Berkshire Eagle, Pittsfield, Mass. In public broadcasting, he became well known for his three Maine related documentaries, “Dearest Andrew,” “The Polar Bears of Blue Hill” and “The Maine That’s Missing,” some broadcast nationally by National Public Broadcasting. Other productions included “Hospice: A Gentle Shelter,” “The New Writers of Maine” and “Marguerite Yourcenar: Gentle Aristocrat.” His locally produced program “Read to Me” received national and international recognition for excellence in children’s broadcasting. His work in theatre included both acting and directing in Connecticut, New York and with Acadia Repertory Theatre, Bangor. Mr. Bisset enjoyed volunteer work with reading “Books for the Blind” in Lenox, Mass., as well as working with Hospice of Eastern Maine. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ronald Candage of Ormand Beach, Fla.; and a brother, Donald of Jefferson. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Orphanage, Old Town.
