BANGOR – Charline S. “Sharkey” Hurd, 80, passed away peacefully Feb. 22, 2009, at a local health care facility after a long illness. She was born Aug. 27, 1928, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Mark and Gladys (Trask) Sprague. She received her early schooling in Starboard and Bucks Harbor before moving to Bangor, where she graduated with the Bangor High School, Class of 1948. She retired from Great Northern Paper Co., after more than 15 years of service. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Lawrence Hurd; three children, Barbara, Lawrence Jr. and Charles and his wife, Cathy, all of Bangor; grandchildren, Christina and Andrew Hurd of Bangor, Heather Hurd Mercier and her husband, Edward, of Brewer; great-grandchildren, MacKenzie and Mitchell Mercier; her sister, Marion Huntley of Starboard; her brother, William of Machias; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by five brothers, two sisters; and her daughter-in-law, Sandra. A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Canon Mary Ann Taylor, pastoral associate of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bangor, officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401, in memory of Charline and the many four-footed friends she cherished throughout her life.
