EXETER – Mabel P. Hawes, 90, died Feb. 23, 2009, at a Hartland health care facility. She was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Washburn, a daughter of Clarence and Eva (Foran) Rogers. Mabel was the oldest of nine children and moved to Exeter at a very young age. She married Elvin Hawes Sr., Sept. 21, 1935, and he predeceased her March 19, 1980. She was holder of the Boston Post Gold Cane for the town of Exeter, and was a member of Exeter Historical Society, the Eastern Star, the Exeter Grange and Farmers Home Extension. Mabel loved to cook and made many birthday and wedding cakes for family and friends. She is survived by one son, Elvin and wife, Pearl Brayson Hawes, of Moscow; two grandsons, Stephan and wife, Tracie, of Choctaw, Okla., Leigh and wife, Roxann, of Skowhegan; a granddaughter, Cynthia and Eric Carron of Detroit; a great-granddaughter, Leah Carron of Detroit; three stepgranddaughters, Ariel Carron, Denise and Rachel Carrow; a brother, Vance and wife, Shirley Rogers, of Exeter; a sister, Dorothy and husband, Jay McDonald, of Corinna; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Bottenfield of Palmyra and Vivian Baker of Pittsfield. Mabel was predeceased by five brothers, Sandy, Earl, Glen, Fred and Stora; a sister, Paige Brown of Florida; a grandson, Wayne A. Hawes; and a granddaughter, Coleen M. Hawes. There will be no visiting hours. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Crosby & Neal Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, with Pastor George Finnemore officiating.
