HOULTON – Bernard S. Maher Jr., 64, died Feb. 21, 2009, at his residence. He was born Jan. 13, 1945, in Orlando, Fla., the son of Bernard Sr. and Hilda (Tidd) Maher. Bernie attended Houlton schools and graduated from Fryeburg Academy. He then graduated from Ricker College and attended the University of South Carolina. For many years Bernie owned and operated Maher Travel Agency, Houlton. He also had worked as executive director of Houlton Band of Maliseets Housing Authority and General Electric, Stamford, Conn., and then moved to Florida and was employed for 10 years as a bookkeeper and treasurer. Bernie moved to New Hampshire and retired because of health reasons and later moved to Hermon, where he could be closer to home. He was a member and past exalted ruler of Houlton Lodge of Elks No. 835 and also served as chairman of the trustee’s and chairman of the scholarship committee. He is survived by his parents of Houlton; wife, Peggy (Pray) Maher of Hermon; two daughters, Sherri Quint of Houlton and Cristy Maher of Chesapeake, Va.; two sisters, Donna M. Maher of Houlton and Ellen S. Maher of Houston; one granddaughter, Ashley Nall of Houlton; nephews, Michael Hartford of Portland and James Fitch of North Carolina; niece, Kim Dunlop of Houlton; great-nieces, Brittany and Sarah Sirois; great-great-nephew, Lucas Sirois, all of Houlton; stepchildren, Megan Taylor Johnson of Carmel and Joey Taylor of New Hampshire; stepgrandchildren, David, Michael and Emily; and his mother-in-law, Laura Pray of Houlton. An Elks funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Dunn Funeral Home.
