People interested in helping support Bangor High School Project Graduation 2009 while having a great time are invited to attend the organization’s version of “Dancing Like the Stars.” There will be two performances, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 6, and Thursday, March 12, in Peakes Auditorium at the high school on Broadway in Bangor.
The fundraiser features 10 couples consisting of BHS seniors and BHS staff who, under the direction of ballroom dance instructor and choreographer Karen McCall, will entertain by performing the salsa, merengue, samba, cha-cha, waltz, fox trot, hustle, nightclub slow, tango, jitterbug swing, West Coast swing, rumba and the Texas two-step.
Admission is $5, $10 for patron seating, $1 per vote when voting for your favorite couple.
Tickets are available at Patrick’s Hallmark in the Broadway Shopping Center and Fairmount Market on Hammond Street, both in Bangor, and also will be available at the door.
All proceeds benefit BHS Project Graduation Class of 2009.
Based on the television show “Dancing with the Stars” the dancers will be judged by local dance studio owners and co-hosts are Sharon Pelletier of WABI-TV and longtime Project Graduation supporter Robert Welch.

Old Town-Orono Animal Orphanage board president Roberta “Bobbi” Fowler wants you to know it will be conducting a “phoneathon” from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 7, during which volunteers will ask for your financial support in raising funds to benefit animal care.
Fowler said in a release that it is the intent of the nonprofit organization to alert the public that it will be “telemarketing for a few hours,” and it is the volunteers’ hope that “everybody answers their phones.”
But, she points out, if those hours are inconvenient for you, or you might not be at home but you still want to offer your support for the work of this organization, you can call 866-0748 or 827-8777 anytime that day and volunteers on the other end of the line will take your pledge.
Folks at the animal orphanage, a no-kill shelter that takes in strays and works to find them homes, want you to know that, particularly this year, they have discovered that some people have had to give up their animals because they can no longer afford to keep them, and that “the fortunate ones end up” at shelters such as the animal orphanage.
They also remind you that, along with everything else, the cost and care of feeding these homeless pets is rising, so your contributions are needed more than ever.
As this organization points out, “the public’s support is crucial.”

The public is invited to attend a benefit supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Masonic Hall on Route 2 in Hermon.
This special event, Gladys Knowles told me, will help raise funds for the proposed Veterans Memorial Park to be built in Hermon on the Billings Road in front of Hermon Elementary School.
Knowles is a member of that committee, which is chaired by Larry Davis.
Admission is by donation only for this meal of beef stew and chicken stew with biscuits and dessert, Knowles said.
If you cannot attend but would like to make a contribution to help erect this memorial in honor of all Hermon veterans, you can make a check out to Veterans Memorial Park and mail it to Knowles at 659 York Road, Hermon 04401.

Viola Purinton Giffin, who resides at Orono Commons, will celebrate her 100th birthday on Sunday, March 15.
Born in Kenduskeag a century ago, the mother of one child, with three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren “had a full life” as a homemaker as she traveled around the world as a Coast Guard officer’s wife, her daughter, Alola Morrison of Orrington, told me.
To help our newest centenarian celebrate this very special day, her daughter hopes friends old and new will toast her mother with a shower of cards, letters or notes by mailing them to Viola Giffin, Orono Commons, 117 Bennoch Road, Orono 04473.
