DEXTER – William Edward Smith Sr., 87, died Feb. 28, 2009, at Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft. He was born Dec. 12, 1921, in Virginia. He came to Maine in the early ’40s, and started working for Bath Iron works. Bill later moved to Dexter and worked for Fay Scott Landis. He met and married the love of his life, Marie Clukey, whom he married June 2, 1945, and they lovingly raised six children. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. In the mid-’80s he retired and learned to play golf, which became his second passion after his family. He is survived by two sons, William Smith Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, of Texas, and Anthony Smith and his companion, Holly, of Florida; three daughters, Christine Pooler and her husband, Carroll, Cynthia Cyr, and Michele Smith and her companion, Rick, all of Dexter; 11 grandchildren, including his little buddy, Joshua; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Richard Clukey and his wife, Mary, of Connecticut; also all of his girls at Bud’s. He was predeceased by his wife, in 1993; a daughter, Nancy (Smith) Burton, in 1964; a grandson, Matthew Pooler, in 2000; and a granddaughter, Amanda Cyr, in 2001. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at Crosby & Neal, 61 Main St., Dexter. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter.
