DEER ISLE – Edith Una (Beckman) Quinn, R.N., passed away Feb. 27, 2009, comforted by her family at a Deer Isle health care facility. She was born Dec. 10, 1910, on Vinalhaven, the daughter of Sigvard and Julia (Rossiter) Beckman. She graduated from Vinalhaven schools and Portland Maine General Hospital School of Nursing. She moved to Eagle Island to work as a private duty nurse upon graduation where she met and married Capt. James Quinn. She often stated some of her fondest memories were of life on Eagle Island. They later moved to Sunset, where they built the home which she resided in until her move to Island Nursing Home. For 50 years she assisted her husband and later her sons in serving Eagle and the surrounding islands in the mailboat business. She helped with mail, grocery and laundry delivery, as well as visitor coordinator, taxi driver and friendly voice to those checking in on the radio. Edith did all this, raised her family and worked for more than 20 years at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital as night nurse and private duty nurse after retirement. She truly loved being a nurse and her compassionate care is remembered by all those that had the pleasure to work with her or be one of her patients. She was a member of Sunset and Deer Isle Congregational churches and sung in the choirs there for more than 40 years. She was a 60-plus year member of Deer Isle Grange and the holder of the Boston Post Gold Cane in Deer Isle. Survivors include her three sons, Clifford of Sunset, Richard and wife, Bernice, of Haynes City, Fla., and Robert of Milbridge; grandchildren, Ralph and wife, Nena Quinn, of Prospect, Tami (Quinn) and husband, Mike Linscott, of Ellsworth and Richard of Stuart, Va.; great-grandchildren, Cassandra Quinn, Lacy and Tadd Linscott, Tiffany and Kelsey Quinn; brother, John Beckman of Vinalhaven; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, James Quinn; her parents; sister, Martha Gunderson; and brother, Francis Beckman. Private family services will take place now with a memorial service later in the spring. Donations may be made in her memory to Island Nursing Home, Sunset and Deer Isle Congregational churches or the BHMH OB Unit.
