KINGSBURY PLANTATION, Maine — For his dedication to this small community, the Maine House approved a resolve Thursday to name Route 16 from the Abbot town line to the Mayfield town line the Alton E. Worcester Highway.

Worcester, who died in 2003, had served the town as its road commissioner, first assessor and constable for many years.

Residents presented the request to name the highway after Worcester to Rep. Pete Johnson, R-Greenville, who filed the resolve. The Senate is expected to approve the resolve on Friday, and then the document will be signed by Gov. John Baldacci. Johnson said Thursday there is no opposition to the resolve.

“Worcester was tax assessor, constable and road commissioner for three decades and he did all he could to help everybody in that tiny town and those who passed through the town,” Johnson said. He also noted that for 16 years Worcester was active as post commander of the Stott Flanders Legion Post in Sangerville.

Lois Worcester, who was on hand for the vote Thursday, called it a wonderful action to take in her husband’s memory.

“It was amazing to listen to three gentlemen from the House of Representatives talk about my husband,” Worcester said. She said Reps. Paul Davis, R-Sangerville, Doug Thomas, R-Ripley, and Johnson all spoke about Worcester’s civic duties and his helpfulness.
