PORTLAND, Maine — Friends, family and admirers will gather Sunday in Portland for a memorial service for environmental pioneer Harrison Richardson.

The longtime trial lawyer, former legislator and one-time candidate for governor died last month at his home in Gorham at age 79.

Richardson is remembered as a leading force in the passage of landmark environmental legislation nearly 40 years ago. He also played a key role in the enactment of the state income tax.

The memorial service will be held at Portland’s Ocean Gateway ferry terminal.
