AMES, Iowa – Walter G. Lovely, 89, passed away Friday, March 6, 2009, at Green Hills Health Care Center. He was born Aug. 19, 1919, in Fort Fairfield, the son of Sherman and Queenie (Canning) Lovely. Walter had been an Ames, Iowa, residence since 1950, and had lived in Fort Fairfield, Portland, Bangor and Silver Springs, Md. He obtained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maine and did graduate work at Iowa State University. Walter worked as an agricultural engineer at Iowa State University and retired in 1988. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of the 1st Marine Division in World War II. Walter married Alma Marie Wasson Aug. 16, 1947, in Bangor. He was a member of Kiwanis Noon Club, Bethesda Lutheran Church, American Legion, AARP, Iowa State University Retirees, National Active and Retired Federal Employees, ASAE, American Agricultural Society, ESA and USSA. Walter is survived by his five children, Walter G. and Mary Lu Lovely Jr. of Eden Prairie, Minn., Stephen N. and Jo Lovely of St. Joseph, Mo., Martha E. and Scott Lilly of Camarillo, Calif., Patricia A. Seeger of Columbus, Ohio, and Robert A. and Kim Lovely of Echo, Ore.; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth, Lillace and Thelma; and three brothers, Luther, Thurber and Eugene. He was predeceased by his wife, Alma Marie in 1997; son, Michael W. Lovely in 2002; two sisters, Marjorie and Anna; and two brothers, Arbor and John. Visitation was held 4-6 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Adams Funeral Home, Ames, Iowa. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 9, at Bethesda Lutheran Church with Pastor Joel Wight-Hoogheem. Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery. Memorial donations are requested to On With Life or his church.
