HARMONY and BANGOR – Virginia Maria Rebar, 85, died March 10, 2009, with her family at her side after a long illness. She was born Aug. 27, 1923, in Bridgeport, Conn., to John and Anna (Dalton) Weir. Virginia attended schools in Bridgeport and entered the workforce at a young age after the death of her father. She was working at Remington Arms Co. when she met her future husband, Michael Rebar. The couple were wed March 1, 1944. Together they raised four children. Virginia worked as a private duty nurse for many years before she retired and moved to Maine in 1982. At their farm in Harmony, Virginia and Mike carried on many of the traditional activities of their county life. Virginia loved to garden and preserve her harvest of fruits and vegetables. She was an avid baker and loved to create something special for her family. Virginia loved crafts and made presents for family and friends. She was a past member of Cambridge Extension Homemakers. Virginia was very proud of her Irish heritage and loved the music and culture of Ireland. Virginia is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Michael of Bangor; children, Virginia Rebar of Harmony, Michael Rebar Jr. and wife, Joyce, of Monroe, Conn., Peter Rebar and wife, Violeta, of Harmony and John Rebar and wife, Donna Miller, of Bangor; six grandchildren, Colleen Rebar, Jesse Rebar and Catty Garcia of Connecticut, Ryan Rebar of Harmony, Alice Philbrick and Helen Rebar of Bangor; and a sister, Ann Zarrelli of Florida. The family thanks the staff of the Maine Veterans’ Home for their care of Virginia during the twilight of her life. A private family memorial service will be held later in the spring.
