ETNA – Ruth M. Gibbons, 76, died March 28, 2009, at her home after a long illness. She was born Nov. 20, 1932, in Massachusetts, the daughter of Peter H. and Bernice (Mayshrall) Cote. She attended schools in Mars Hill. She was the wife of the late Donald F. Gibbons. For more 40 years, Ruth had been the life partner to Walter E. Brown. Ruth worked for many years helping out at Etna Fire Department, where she was affectionately known as “Grandma.” She always enjoyed simple things: flowers, taking a ride and being with her family. She is survived by her life partner, Walter E. Brown of Etna; three sons, John M. Gibbons of Etna, Lawrence E. Gibbons of Oklahoma and Walter E. Gibbons of Etna; two daughters, Christine H. Armstrong of Louisiana and Vera A. Morgan of Virginia; four sisters, Elizabeth, Violet, Arlene and Florence; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, George; stepson, Robert; granddaughter, Jessica; and sister, Pauleen. Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Jubilee Family Worship Center, Elm Street, Newport. Friends who wish may make memorial donations in lieu of flowers to Newport Community Food Bank, 26 High St., Newport.
