PALMYRA and NEWPORT – William “Bill” Sidney Thiele, 90, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009, at the Maine Veteran’s Home, Scarborough. Bill was born in New Jersey and was a charter member of Herbertsville (N.J.) Fire Department, and a member of Brielle (N.J.) Fire Department. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a resident of Newport since 1958. He was employed as a plumber for Gilman Hardware for many years and later for Collagen and Hartland Tannery. After retirement, he worked at Rowe’s Orchards, Newport. Bill was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Mildred A. Thiele; a daughter, Patricia Rowe and her husband, Robert; two brothers, Alan and Leslie Thiele. He is survived by a son, William C. Thiele and wife, Vickie, of Hollis; three grandchildren and spouses, Christopher and Marissa, Jeremy and Stephanie, and Amanda; two great-grandchildren, William and Claire; a sister, Erma Eckman and her husband, Paul; and sisters-in-law, Blanche Thiele, Trudy Thiele, Barb Matthews and her husband, Woodie, and Phyllis Caparn. Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 14, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Committal services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery.
