HARMONY – Elizabeth “Betty” I. Cotta, 84, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2009, surrounded by her family at her home, after a long illness. Betty was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Harmony, daughter of Norman B. and Ethel M. (Brown) Cooley. She married Daniel G. Cotta, Dec. 8, 1943, in Harmony. She was employed for many years in the shoe industry in Maine, retiring in 1983 from Dexter Shoe Co., Dexter. Betty was a lifelong resident of Harmony, a member of First Baptist Church, a dedicated homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother, and proud great-grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband of more than 60 years, Daniel. She is survived by her four sons, Dennis of Harmony, David and his wife, Lorraine, of Guilford, Donald and his wife, Barbara, of Harmony and Douglas and his wife, Sherry, of Dexter; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; her brothers, Lauriston Cooley of Harmony and Elwood Cooley and his wife, Ruth, of Skowhegan; her sister, Norma Giovannucci and her husband, Larry, of Harmony; several nieces and nephews; and two special caregivers, whom made it possible for Betty to remain in her home during her illness, Pam Pomerleau and Bridgett Dellarma, both of Harmony. The family expresses their gratitude to the staff at Redington-Fairview General Hospital for the outstanding care and comfort she received while a patient there; and a very special appreciation to Dr. Gina Gomez, who went above and beyond to care for Betty throughout the past several years. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Chadbourne Cemetery, Chadbourne Road, Harmony, with Pastor David Waltz officiating.
