AUGUSTA – Betty Louise Alward, 79, a resident of North Monmouth, went to rest in God’s arms Thursday, May 27, 2009, surrounded by her family at Augusta Rehabilitation Center, Augusta. She was born Sept. 30, 1929, in Patten, the daughter of Wesley and Eva Giles Porter. Betty married Clayton A. Alward, Dec. 9, 1946, in Canada. In addition to being a homemaker, she devoted her life to being a minister’s wife at North Monmouth Full Gospel Assembly, and used her skills as a seamstress at George the Taylor, Winthrop, for several years. Betty loved to do crossword puzzles and enjoyed playing Scrabble. She will be remembered by many for her faith, sense of humor and caring nature. She was a mother to many. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, the Rev. Clayton Alward of Monmouth; a son, Thomas Alward and his wife, Sherrie, of Readfield; three daughters, Kathryn Brown and her husband, Larry, of Tennessee, Christina Pagliaroli and her husband, Bruce, of South China, and Martha Alward and her significant other, Larry Albee, of Windsor; six grandchildren, Beth Alward Morgan of Augusta, Jeremy Brown of Alabama, Jennifer Brown Crabtree of Tennessee, Merri Alward of Fairfield, Brian Stevens of Augusta and Jessica Pagliaroli of South China; nine great-grandchildren, Ben, Gabe, Jake, Courtney, Katie, Chelsea, Clara, Abbie and Eva; and a new great-granddaughter, Isabella, expected in October; two sisters, Irma Detour of Bangor and Maxine Lawlor of Connecticut; three brothers, Raymond Porter and Clinton Porter of Patten, and Bobby Porter of Delaware; many nieces, nephews and special friends. Betty was predeceased by her parents; two sons, Daniel Earl and Clayton Jr.; and two brothers, Arnold Porter and Wesley Porter Jr. The family wishes to thank those at Augusta Rehabilitation who became friends with Betty and provided her with such loving care. Local visiting hours will be held 4-8 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth. Time will be provided between 7-8 p.m. for those wishing to speak about their memories of Betty. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Houlton Full Gospel Assembly, Outer Court Street, Houlton. Visiting hours will be noon-1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
