SEBRING, Fla. – Leslie “Toot” Grant, 77, died May 2, 2009, in Sebring, Fla. Leslie was born Oct. 23, 1931, in Columbia, to Mr. Hugh Grant and Mrs. Frieda (White) Grant. Leslie was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Korea. He worked at Viner Shoe Co. for 38 years and four years at Bass Shoe. The many people who worked with Leslie throughout the years respected and admired him. After he retired he spent several years in Winterport, where he repaired sewing machines. He eventually retired to Sebring, Fla. He enjoyed the great outdoors, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, water sports and NASCAR. Leslie was a kind and humble man and though he was physically strong, he spoke softly and had a kind heart. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ethel (Violette) Grant; his sister-in-law, Charlene (Violette) Bjorn and her husband, John, of Dedham; his sister-in-law, Jean (Crossman) Truitt and her husband, Bud, of Winterport; several very special nieces, nephews and cousins, to whom he will always be remembered lovingly as “Uncle Toot.” He lost his only son, Clement Grant, at the young age of 22 to Lou Gehrig disease.
