MACHIAS – William H. Schencks Jr., 79, died June 2, 2009, at his residence. He was born April 13, 1930, in Columbia Falls, son of William Sr. and Elsie (Varney) Schencks. He joined the U.S. Army in 1948, serving in the Korean War where he received a Purple Heart and First Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. Upon his return from the service, he worked as a meat cutter until his retirement, running his own store, Billy’s Cash Market, for 17 years. William was a huge baseball enthusiast since high school and loved the Red Sox. He spent as much time as possible trout fishing with friends and family. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Frazure Schencks; and sisters, Alberta Grant, Helen Jordan and Nora Schencks. William is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Lyla (Wallace) Schencks of Machias; his daughters, Cynthia Schencks of Machias, Valerie Look of Augusta, Ann Gilmore and husband, John, and Belinda Wood and partner, Gordon Paul, all of Machias; brothers, James and Edward Schencks; sisters, Gertrude Carver, Betty Redimarker and Vertie Blackburn; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
