NEW SWEDEN – Basil Eugene Ferguson, 77, husband of Arline Ferguson, died June 4, 2009, at his residence. He was born Oct. 10, 1931, in Caribou, the son of Shelbourne and Ina (McKeen) Ferguson. He was a graduate of Caribou High School and served with the U.S. Army, 3rd Armored Division during the Korean War. Basil was a mechanic for several area businesses, as well as a self-employed potato farmer for many years. He was a member of Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church, New Sweden. Basil was also a member of Caribou Masonic Lodge AF & AM No. 170 and Perkins-Plourde Post No. 136 American Legion, Stockholm, and a volunteer at the Maine Veterans’ Home. He was a soft-spoken man of few words. Anyone who knew him, knew he was a tease. He was extremely giving and was always lending a helping hand when needed. During his career he enjoyed working with his hands, fixing anything from toys to skis, motorcycles, snowmobiles, bicycles, automobiles and all of his farm equipment. He enjoyed seeing his grandchildren, Makayla, Nick and his wife, Meg. His greatest joy was working on a tractor, doing farm work on his little earthly piece of heaven. His Green Mountain potatoes were known nation wide. Basil married Arline (Johnson) Ferguson, April 28, 1955. Surviving in addition to his wife of New Sweden, are two daughters, Sandra Ann Ferguson of Orono and Colleen Macklin and her husband, Christopher, of South Portland; one brother, Ralph Ferguson and his wife, Gwen, of Caribou; one sister, Guelda Michaud of Caribou; two grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Jay Ferguson; and a brother-in-law, Claude Michaud.
