Chris Fogler, Jamie Ruginski and Abbey Leonardi were among the Maine high school stars who shined the brightest at the New England Interscholastic track and field championships in Burlington, Vt. on Saturday.

Fogler, a John Bapst of Bangor senior, came in second in the 300-meter hurdles in 38.26 seconds while Ruginski of Bonny Eagle in Buxton was third in 38.76.

Ruginski, who will attend the University of Maine in the fall, also won the long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 2½ inches while taking second in the triple jump, soaring to 46-2.

Other Maine boys who did well include Bucksport’s Vincent Tymoczko, who was seventh in the 400 in 49.56 seconds, the fastest time ever run by a Maine Class C boys runner.

The mark is not a state record, however, since those can only be achieved in state meets.

Maine was well-represented in the distance races, with Greely of Cumberland Center’s Mark McCauley finishing fifth in the 800, Scarborough’s Nate Hathaway sixth in the 1,600 and Will Geoghegan of Brunswick eighth in the 3,200.

Also in the hurdles, Brewer’s Steven Rice was 18th in the 110s and 16th in the 300s.

In the relays, Bangor’s 4×100 team of Tim Smith, David Pardilla, Josiah Hartley and Tyler Pembroke was 19th while Hampden’s 4×4 squad of Nate Rocker, Greg O’Donnell, Darik Frye and Matt Toothaker was 17th. The Broncos’ 4×800 quartet of Michael Bommarito, Evan Piccirillo, O’Donnell and Frye took 14th.

On the girls’ side, Kennebunk freshman Leonardi ran to an impressive third in the 1,600, coming in at 4:54.14 while classmate Emily Durgin of Bonny Eagle cracked the 11-minute barrier in the 3,200, finishing fourth in 10:57.85.

Leavitt of Turner’s Alli-Sue Fereshetian ran the top time in the 100 hurdle trials before coming in fourth in the final. Edward Little of Auburn’s Emily Dodge and Deanna Wilbur of Bangor were 15th and 16th in the trials, respectively.

Wilbur came back to place fifth in the 300 hurdles, running 45.15. Teammates Katie Porter and Jen Tsang each cleared 9 feet in the pole vault to finish in a tie for 20th place.

Massabesic of Waterboro’s Georgia Bossie (third in the discus) and Keila Grigware of Biddeford (champion in the javelin) were the other Maine schoolgirl athletes who placed.

Danielle Hutchins of Mount Desert Island was ninth in the 100 dash trials, while York’s Chelsey Tewell finished sixth in the trials before settling for eighth in the finals. Eight qualify for the finals.
