BANGOR – Lucille Dorr, 91, died June 24, 2009, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born June 21, 1918, in Bangor, daughter of Oscar J. Paulin and Clara Bernice Babcock. She graduated from Bangor High School and attended the University of Maine until her first marriage to Jack Phee. In 1944, she joined the U.S. Army and received training in medical laboratory technology at Grile General Hospital, Cleveland. Upon her discharge from the Army, she returned to the University of Maine to continue her studies to become a registered medical technician. After completing her training she worked at Eastern Maine Medical Center. In 1948, the hospital sent her to Columbia University, New York City, to study under the famous Dr. Georgios Papanikolaou, who developed the Pap Smear. For the rest of her career she specialized in analyzing Pap Smears at Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital. Lucille was a square dancing enthusiast and met her second husband, George Dill, as well as her third husband, Fred Dorr, at square dancing events. She was married to Fred Dorr for 42 years until his death Feb. 25, 2009. Lucille had many talents and enjoyed quilt making for family and friends, rug hooking, jewelry making, sewing, ceramics and was an avid reader. She and Fred traveled the country in their camper until health problems developed. Surviving are her sister, Winifred Collins and her husband, Hayward, of Orange, N.J., and Pushaw Lake; nephews, Christopher Collins and his children, Alexander and Sydney of Montclair, N.J.; Mark and Stephen of Hollywood, Calif.; cousin, John Downing Jr. and his wife, Vera, of Clifton and Phoenix; and their families, John Downing, Mary Minctons of Phoenix, Elizabeth Downing and her husband, Dennis Cox, of Brewer and Catherine Downing of Brighton, Mass.; special cousins, Mark and Rosemary Soucy, Nancy Downing Robbins and husband, Donald, of Sidney, Dianne Darling of South Thomaston; special friends, Carl and Eileen White; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Tom and Donna Davis, who have helped so much throughout the years and especially this past year. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor.
