BANGOR – Philip Wayne Higgins, beloved husband and father, died July 1, 2009 peacefully at home. He was born May 7, 1922, in Bangor, son of George L. and Amy (Woodworth) Higgins. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1940 and the University of Maine, Class of 1944 and Class of 1948 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Betty J. McKenney upon his return. Philip worked for Arthur Chapin Co., for years, becoming treasurer. He also worked for the University of Maine in the payroll department, retiring in 1988. He is survived by his four children, Beth and her husband, George Osler, of Belfast, Janice and her husband, Michael Clark, of Champions Gate, Fla., Philip Higgins Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Rockport, Megan and her husband, Bruce Elam, of Falmouth; five grandchildren, Amy Badger, Cali Martell, Leigh Creveling, Benjamin and Samuel Higgins; two great-grandchildren, Aubrey Badger and Isabella Martell; one brother, George L. Higgins Jr. and his wife, Katherine, of Southwest Harbor. He was predeceased by his wife, Betty, in 2006; his daughter, Leigh; his parents; his brothers, Paul and Richard; and his sister, Joyce. A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 6, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor.
