ORLAND – John D. Reed, 70, passed away June 30, 2009, at home with those who loved him. He was born in 1938, in Hope, to Lillian (Campbell) and Archie Reed. Graduating in 1957 from Appleton High School, he served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant, 6th U.S. Army, 1961-1964. John worked at St. Regis Paper Co., Bucksport, for nine years. He married Betty (Mann) LaRue in 1968, and together they raised two sons, Steven LaRue and Daniel Reed, all of Orland. They also operated Union Street General Store, Bangor, and Cobb’s Store, Belmont, for many years. In 1996, John retired from Maine State Prison after 17 years as a corrections officer. He is survived by Betty; their sons and families, Daniel Reed and fianc?e, Jessica Kennedy and children, Cassie and Marcus Reed, of Jefferson, Jenna Reed of Bradley and Brady Kennedy of Orland, and Steven and Sheila LaRue and children, Randy LaRue of Orland and Christine Robishaw and family of Steuben and great-granddaughter, Sarah Lynn; mother-in-law, Phyllis Mann of Orland; two sisters and their families, Ellen (Reed) and Montie Cunningham Jr. of Vassalboro, and Frances (Reed) and Earl Soper of Orland; brother, Donald Reed of Grand Haven, Mich.; many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Irene Murphy and Elvina Glidden; and brothers, Jerry Edward Murphy and Willis Reed. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 10, in the family lot at Pine Grove Cemetery, Appleton Village, with the Rev. James Flye officiating.
