COLUMBIA FALLS – Erwest Wadsworth Hartford, 92, fondly known as “Tink,” died peacefully July 2, 2009, with his wife of 65 years, Ruth (Allen) Hartford, at his side. He was born Dec. 29, 1916, in Columbia Falls, son of the late Daniel W. and Lottie (Worcester) Hartford. Tink graduated from Columbia Falls High School in 1936 and entered the U.S. Air Force Air Transport Command in 1940, and served at Presque Isle Air Force Base, Presque Isle, where he met his wife, Ruth (Allen), and then transferred to Greenland and Newfoundland. He retired from the service taking a job with the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Ocean Survey, currently NOAA, which allowed Tink and Ruth to travel across the United States. Tink was an avid golfer making two holes-in-one on a Cape Cod, Mass., golf course. He also holds the record at Great Cove Golf Course, Roque Bluffs, for the lowest score shot in a round of golf. He also enjoyed cutting firewood and managing his blueberry fields in Township 24. He belonged to the Veterans’ of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Knights of Pythias. He was a frequent visitor of Tall Barneys restaurant, Jonesport, and The White House restaurant, Jonesboro. In addition to his wife, family members include several nieces and nephews, including Robert Look; and several close friends and neighbors. He was a favorite uncle to many. He was predeceased by siblings, Ernest Hartford, Marjorie Rockell, Goldie Sprague, Dan Hartford, Crawford Hartford, Rena Martin and Graydon Hartford. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at Columbia Falls United Methodist Church, Columbia Falls.
