Mainstream network news shows like NBC’s Today daily coverage to Michael Jackson’s

death and the ongoing saga of his will, his children and his funeral. The deaths of actors

David Carradine and Farrah Fawcett and TV personality Ed McMahon generate similar

attention. Is this warranted? Have Americans always been fascinated by the lives – and

deaths – of the famous and rich? Or is the news media responsible for dumbing down

America?
