BREWER, Maine — A woman from Blue Hill was injured Tuesday after her car collided with a garbage truck.

Carolyn McNeil, 79, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she was treated for back and neck pain, Brewer police Officer Liz Kelley said Wednesday. Kelley said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

McNeil’s husband, 80-year-old Donald McNeil, a passenger in the four-door Toyota sedan, was not injured, Kelley said.

A hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday that no further information about McNeil’s medical condition was available.

According to Kelley, the crash occurred about 3:30 p.m. on South Main Street at a curve in front of the Brookside Grill. McNeil was heading toward Brewer when she apparently crossed the centerline and struck a trash truck traveling in the opposite direction and driven by James Maynard, 42, of Glenburn.

McNeil’s car struck the garbage truck nearly broadside where the gas tank is located, Kelley said.

“Luckily, it didn’t explode,” the officer said.

Both Maynard and his passenger, 23-year-old Andrew Teasdale, whose hometown was not available, escaped injury, Kelley said.

Kelley estimated that the garbage truck, owned by Neil Bonneville of Exeter, had about $3,000 in damage, which included a bent tire rim. She said McNeil’s car was destroyed.
