BUCKSPORT – Polly Corkran Spratt, 93, passed away peacefully July 7, 2009, at an Ellsworth nursing home. She was born Oct. 30, 1915, in Prince George’s County, Md., at the home of maternal grandparents, William and Ann Mary (Minnix) Pyles. She was the daughter of Clarence and Charlotte (Pyles) Corkran. She attended schools in Maryland and Virginia and graduated from American University, Washington, D.C., where she was elected to Beta Beta Beta National Science Honor Society and Alpha Chi Omega National Sorority. She was married to James S. Spratt of Bucksport for 47 years. She taught school in Maryland and Virginia for 10 years and was librarian at Sherwood Forest School in Virginia for 12 years. When James retired from the FBI, they returned to Bucksport where they were members of Franklin Street Methodist Church. She was a life member of Friends of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, past president of Norumbega Woman’s Club and Chapter B of the P.E.O. Club. In Bucksport, Polly was past president of October Club, a director of the Historical Society, and belonged to Felicity Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She and her husband also served on the board of Bucksport Health Center. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Clarence H. Corkran; and children, James S. Spratt Jr., Charles A. Spratt and Ann Thomas. She is survived by her daughter, Nancie S. Noyes and her husband, Richard, of Bucksport; daughters-in-law, Evelyn Barker Spratt of Conway, N.H., and Ronnie Hockmen of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, James Spratt III, Jacquie Day, Jennifer Falk, Suzy Spratt McManus, and Rebecca and Timothy Noyes; and soon to be eight great-grandchildren; also her sister, Jeanne Corkran and her family of Woodbridge, Va. Visiting hours for family and friends will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. Immediately after visiting hours, a graveside service will be held at Silver Lake Cemetery, Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick and Rose Krienke officiating.
