CARIBOU – Winnifred M. Grass, 89, wife of the late Ellwood Grass, died unexpectedly July 8, 2009, at her residence. She was born July 25, 1919, in Sheridan, the daughter of the late Thomas P. and Hazel T. (Tardif) Cote. Mrs. Grass was a 1936 graduate of Caribou High School, and was employed as a cook at the Loring and Limestone school lunch programs for many years. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where she was also a member of the Ladies of St. Anne. Mrs. Grass loved to knit and crochet, and was a member of the Knitwits Knitting Club. Winnifred was also an avid Red Sox fan. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Sandra Grass of Limestone; her two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Barnes Hutchings and Frederic of Presque Isle, and Sandra Lee Grassick and Robert of Weymouth, Mass.; one brother, Joseph Cote and his wife, Marcella, of Brewer; two sisters, Lena Bouchard and her husband, Adrian, of Presque Isle, and Evelyn Bouchard of Millinocket; seven grandchildren, Mark Barnes, Tamra Flint, Rhonda Hamilton, Jason Grass, Tiffany Michaud, Michele Richards and Jennifer Grassick; four stepgrandchildren, Todd Hutchings, Ann Swan, Naomi Malott and Janet Barnes; 11 great-grandchildren, nine great-stepgrandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Mrs Grass was predeceased by her husband, Ellwood, in 1998; and three brothers, Lawrence, Reynold and Robert Cote. Friends may call 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou, where members of Ladies of St. Anne will conduct afternoon prayer services 3 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, July 13, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Mrs. Grass’ nephew, Father David Cote, officiating.
