STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine — Visitors to a Waldo County historical site will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Fort Pownal July 18-19 at Fort Point State Park.

According to a news release, the celebration will feature colonial re-enactments, historical demonstrations, children’s activities, a parade and a commemorative ceremony.

Tours of the Fort Point lighthouse will be conducted from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. Refreshments and a lobster dinner will be sold to benefit the Stockton Harbor Sailing Center.

In addition, silent auctions will be held July 18 and a live auction will be held at 3:30 p.m. on July 18.

According to the news release, in 1759 Massachusetts Gov. Thomas Pownall sought to fortify the mouths of Maine’s key rivers to force the French and Indians to remain inland.

Pownall led a group of 400 men who built a fort at the site then known as Wassaumkeag Point.

Volunteers are still needed to help with tower tours, parking and other activities. For more information, contact park manager Terry Cole at 567-3356 or go to http://www.fortpownal250.4t.com for more information.
