WINTHROP – Asa A. Gordon, 88, of Highland Heights, died Friday, July 10, 2009, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta. He was born June 16, 1921, in Winn, the son of George H. and Maude B. Gordon. He was educated in Winn schools, Farmington Normal School and the University of Maine, graduating with a master’s degree. Asa served in the Army Air Force as a pilot trainer during World War II. He married Greta Rhodenizer, Dec. 23, 1944. He was known by many across the state as an expert in school finance and was responsible for assisting in the formation of School Administration Districts. He additionally worked more than a decade as a budget supervisor at the University of Maine at Augusta. He served on Winthrop School Board for many years, was the father of four, grandfather of 15 and great-grandfather of two. He was a longtime member of Winthrop United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer and leading the Sunday school and Youth Organization. Asa loved gardening, camping and family gatherings. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Greta Gordon of Winthrop; two sons, Laurin Gordon and his wife, Marie, of Hallowell and Bill Gordon and his husband, Richard Rossiter, of Mondelein, Ill.; two daughters, Marilyn Gordon and her husband, Hashem Qweider, of Augusta and Judith Jewell and her husband, Brian, of Winthrop; a brother, Galen Gordon of Medway; a sister, Ruth Varney of Dalton, Mass.; 15 grandchildren, Katie and her husband, Tim, Adam and his wife, Nessa, Amy, Andrew, Sarah, Karin, Timothy, Leah and her husband, Thom, Ian and his wife, Libby, Jon, Benjamin, Nathan, Matthew and his fianc?e, Bitz, Aaron and his wife, Christina, and Megan; two great-grandchildren, Kiernan and Olivia; several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held 10-11 a.m. Monday, July 13, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Livermore Falls. www.khrfuneralhomes.com
