BANGOR and CONWAY, N.H. – Corinna E. (Sandstrom) McManus, 81, died July 14, 2009, at Memorial Hospital, Conway, N.H. She was born Aug. 14, 1927, in New Sweden, one of nine children born to George and Laura (Lizotte) Sandstrom. In 1948 she married her husband of 41 years, Francis J. McManus. They lived in Bangor for their entire married life. Corinna was predeceased by her husband in 1989 and she relocated to the White Mountains in New Hampshire to be near family. She continued her passion of watching babies and caring for others. Corinna was raised on a potato farm in Northern Maine. The work ethic she learned there followed her throughout her whole life. Wherever she lived she surrounded herself with beautiful flowers and of course as many vegetables as she could grow. In her retirement she took up painting and bestowed friends and family with gifts of painted scenery and animals of every description. She is survived by her four children, Diane McManus of Houston, Texas, Patricia (McManus) Poulin and husband, Donald, of Conway N.H., Sharon (McManus) Modery and husband, Ralph, of Sarasota, Fla., and Steve McManus and wife, Suzanne, of Conway, N.H.; four sisters, Gladys (Sandstrom) Callahan of Minneapolis, Ruth (Sandstrom) Cole of Bangor, Janice (Sandstrom) Borden of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Doreen (Sandstrom) Chavez of California; three brothers, Clarence Sandstrom of Rocky Face, Ga., Norman Sandstrom of Columbia, S.C., and Russell Dowd of South Carolina; numerous nieces and nephews. She will be missed by many, especially her eight grandchildren, Sam, Dan and Sophie Poulin, Alexander Modery, Nikkiah, Corey, Christian and Emma McManus. She was predeceased by her sister, Leta (Sandstrom) Bell; a brother, Maynard Sandstrom; and a grandchild, Gabriel Duncan McManus. A service in honor and celebration of Corinna’s life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor, where family and friends may visit 11 a.m. until the service begins.
