BROOKLIN – Marlis G. Smith, 85, died July 13, 2009, at a Blue Hill hospital. She was born July 22, 1923, in Aachen, Germany, daughter of Baron Ernst and Baroness Edith (Beissel) von Greve Dierfeld. She had moved to New York City as a child and had also lived in Wilton, Conn., and Brooklin. Marlis was a passionate reader, music lover, and devoted wife, mother and friend. She was a talented pianist and artist and especially liked working with watercolors. She enjoyed spending time as a volunteer for the Volunteer Referral Center in New York, and Medic Alert in Blue Hill, as well as at Bagaduce Music Lending Library of Blue Hill. She is survived by sons, Spencer Smith and wife, Patricia, and Oliver C. Smith of New York; daughters, Anne S. Tucker and husband, Ken, of Pennsylvania and Sarah H. Smith and husband, David Yezzi, of New York; nine grandchildren, Samuel, Rachel, Hannah, Sarah, Hayley, Laura, Susannah, Harrison and Nicholas; and one great-grandson, Tristan. She was predeceased by her husband, Harrison V.; and daughters, Claire Smith and Elizabeth Crow. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church, 330 Hinckley Ridge Road, Blue Hill.
