PORTLAND, Maine — New fishery statistics show Maine was the nation’s No. 3 fishing state in 2008.
The National Marine Fisheries Service this week released its annual U.S. fishery statistics report.
According to the agency, fishermen last year harvested $287 million worth of seafood in Maine. Only Alaska and Massachusetts had higher values.
Still, the value of Maine’s seafood harvest was down from $348 million in 2007. The 17 percent decline was due primarily to the falling value of the state’s lobster harvest.
