How nice it was to hear from Pam Taylor that this summer’s unusual weather can’t dampen the spirits of the East Grand Dames Book Group, “which will be meeting, as always,” at 10 a.m. Eastern or 11 a.m. Atlantic time, Wednesdays: July 29, Aug. 5, Aug. 12 and Aug. 19, at members’ homes in Danforth and Orient, and “on the Balm of Gilead in Green Mountain in New Brunswick,” Taylor wrote.

“During a rainy summer, such as this one has been,” Taylor continued, “the members of the East Grand Dames Book Group are fortunate to have the love of reading to fall back on.

“All are welcome,” she added.

This year’s selections are “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows; “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer; and “The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad” by Fareed Zakaria.

Lyn Smith, librarian of Pittsfield Public Library, reports that author Kathryn Miles will talk about her book “Adventures with Ari: A Puppy, a Leash & Our Year Outdoors,” at 10 a.m. today, in the council chamber on the lower level of the Pittsfield town office.

Theresa Soucy, Bill Miller, Cheryl Grant and Karen Higgins remind residents the Old Fashioned Block Party, sponsored by State Street Area Businesses, is 6-8 tonight in Bangor’s Chapin Park.

While the event is free, donations will be accepted to benefit Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare.

The event features everything from an appearance by the Bangor Band to Anah Shrine Clowns, ice cream, hot dogs and a Bangor Public Library reading corner.

SummerKeys faculty member, pianist Charles Jones, appears in the Mary Potterton Memorial Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at Lubec Congregational Christian Church.

Included in the program will be works by Beethoven, Chopin, Scriabin and Ginastera.

Although the concert is free, Ann Carter reminds guests that “the Piano Tuning Fund basket will be available for contributions.”

And, she added, intermission refreshments “will be offered by Lubec Landmarks.”

President Colleen Newcomb and members of Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice Volunteer Auxiliary are seeking donations of items for a yard sale planned for Sept. 26 in Rockport.

Proceeds from that sale will support Auxiliary activities, which include scholarships for Kno-Wal-Lin personnel, and the Baby-O-Baby program, “which supports the families of newborns and children who are patients of Kno-Wal-Lin’s pediatric program,” said Jill Lang of Pen Bay Healthcare.
